Best Reel Size and Safe Zones
A reel that looks perfect while editing can look different inside the app. Buttons, your username and the caption cover parts of the screen. Using the right size and keeping key items in the safe zone solves this.
The best size
Reels are made for vertical viewing. The standard size is 1080 by 1920 pixels, which is a 9:16 shape. Most phone cameras can record in this shape, and editing apps have a 9:16 option.
What are safe zones?
Safe zones are the parts of the screen that stay clear while people watch. Instagram places its own items on top of your video:
- Top area: the reel label and camera icons.
- Right side: the like, comment, share and audio buttons.
- Bottom area: your username, caption and audio name. This part is usually the biggest.
Practical rules
- Keep titles and subtitles in the middle part of the screen.
- Leave extra space at the bottom, more than at the top.
- Keep faces and important objects away from the right edge.
- Use large, easy-to-read text with strong contrast.
Check before you post
Use the preview in the app and look at it on a real phone. Move any text that is hidden behind a button, then post.
Profile grid crop
Your reel cover also appears in your profile grid, which can crop the edges. Put the main subject of your cover in the center so it looks good in both places.
Exact measurements can change when the app updates, so always do a quick preview check.
